When considering a great topic for the holidays, the only thing that came to mind is ‘cavities.’ I know… kind of weird, but a good portion of my life does revolve around those white things in just about everyone’s mouth. So, what is a cavity? A cavity is just like it sounds, a hole! How does a hole form in a tooth? In the picture attached to this post you can clearly see that the grooves of this tooth are stained black. The grooves are stained black due to the presence of bacteria.
Yep, those little bugs that live just about everywhere make little colonies on your teeth! Yuck. The bacteria grab on to any sugars that we eat, excrete acid, and then turn a tooth black. Sometimes the black grooves that are formed indicate that a giant cavern or ‘cavity’ is formed inside the tooth. Just like the Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the acid squirted out by the bacteria form a ‘not so grand canyon’ for your tooth.
Well, now you know what a cavity is and how it is formed. Maybe you can offer this cool information to your family as you enjoy your Christmas break.
