Endodontics

I’d Rather Have
a Root Canal

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that’s concerned with the dental pulp. The pulp is the material inside the tooth, containing nerves, tissue, and blood vessels, aka root canals! Root canals are the primary treatment associated with endodontics. If you are experiencing sensitivity to hot and cold, a tooth ache, or signs of infection, you may need a root canal. Don’t worry, you’re in good hands with our team at Cowan Family Dentistry in Hillsboro, TX.

What is a root canal?

We know root canals have earned a bad rap over the years. Thankfully, today, root canals are a fairly routine and painless procedure – usually no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled. It’s actually the pain of an infected tooth left untreated that is much worse than the root canal itself. If you have an infection within the pulp or the root of the tooth, you may need a root canal to save it.First, Dr. Cowan will use a local anesthetic to make sure you are comfortable and don’t feel a thing. He will then make a small access hole in the tooth. Using specialized instruments, he will then carefully go in and remove the infection, sterilize the root canal, and fill the chamber to prevent further infection.

Typically, he will finish it off with a beautiful crown to reinforce the tooth and ensure it stays healthy.

Do I need a root canal?

There are several reasons you may have an infection within the pulp of your tooth. Some common causes of endodontic problems include:

  • Traumatic injury
  • Cracked tooth
  • Deep decay

Some common signs of infection include:

  • Toothache
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Pus or abscess
  • Bad taste or bad breath
